FULL “STEAM” AHEAD – “The Art of Science” Inspires Students To See The World Differently
(West Palm Beach, Fla.) More than 150 students from grades three through five got to see science come alive through art “The Art of Science” program through support from Prime Time Palm Beach County. The initiative was a collaborative effort of the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium and the Center for Creative Education (CCE) along with consulting services of STEAM educatory, Dr. Mark Hubka and Janet Hubka of Ilus Arts from San Diego California.
Students put their deductive reasoning, critical thinking and artistic skills to the test through experiments and activities based in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math and Science).
The program consisted of five sequential inter-related sessions on various topics, including cellular science, brain anatomy, DNA and cell regeneration along with art sessions by a CCE artist. Students got the opportunity to reinforce their scientific knowledge through visual art.
Artists and Instructors introduced the students to career path opportunities. “We are so excited to partner with Prime Time to be able to spark creativity in young minds, hopefully inspiring them for a future in a STEM field,” said Lew Crampton, CEO of the Science Center. “We are grateful for Prime Time’s funding that makes this program possible.” Each session served 20-25 children, and each program lasted about an hour and a half.
Prime Time Palm Beach County has supported the after school community with generous funding from the Children’s Services Council of Palm Beach County for more than 15 years. The Children’s Services Council of Palm Beach County is an independent special district established by Palm Beach County voters, who dedicated a source of funding so more children are born healthy, remain free from abuse and neglect, are ready for kindergarten, and have access to quality after school and summer programming.
Prime Time Palm Beach County’s mission is to foster high quality in out-of-school time (OST) programs, which provide opportunities for children and youth to succeed. Accordingly, Prime Time oversees a system for reaching quality standards through assessment, program improvement planning and quality coaching. It also provides professional development, career advising, and networking opportunities to OST practitioners, and through partnerships, supports a range of enrichment activities available to OST programs countywide.
